Wardrobe essential: the white dress shirt

Like it or not, a white dress shirt is the single most important thing every man needs in his wardrobe. I know, white is the HARDEST to keep looking fresh… and it lasts the least amount of time, but trust me, it is your job to ensure you always have a fresh white on hand. Think Don Draper in Mad Men.. and his entire drawer full. You don’t have to go that far, but make sure you have one, and a backup, always.

WHY A WHITE DRESS SHIRT IS ESSENTIAL

Similar to the navy suit, a crisp white dress shirt is your ultimate power tool. Immediately, your look is taken up a notch, and regardless of whether or not you decide to wear a tie, you’re looking pretty darn fine, and ready to take on that interview, that wedding, that business meeting… etc.

WHEN WE SAY DRESS SHIRT, WE MEAN DRESS SHIRT

Not all button-up white shirts are formal enough to qualify as a white dress shirt. Anything with a button-down collar, a casual fabric, or a length that is too short to be easily tucked in does not qualify - these are considered '“sport shirts”, and are in an entirely different category.

When looking for a white dress shirt, you’re looking for a crisp white poplin or twill weave, with a stiff collar (usually with the option of wearing collar stays), no pocket on the front, and a length that is long enough to remain tucked into your suit pants. Obviously we recommend getting it made for you {by us ;)}, to ensure the sleeve length is proper, the neck and body both fit well, and the collar is a proper size for your body, but if you must but it off-the-rack, please ensure it is tailored to fit.
